LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Life of a Lotus, and it’s founder Chanelle Mendes, acknowledge that the land we are operating on known as Canada, is the home to many diverse Indigenous communities. We recognize that the city of Toronto is the ancestral home of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Wendake-Nionwentsio, and the Haudenosaunee. We also recognize, that a land acknowledgement is merely a starting point, and a commitment to ongoing action and accountability.

As a child of parents who immigrated to this land, Chanelle acknowledges that she is a settler to this land, who has benefitted off the ongoing colonial violence enacted against Indigenous peoples. She recognizes that as a first generation university student, she is incredibly privileged, and takes on a personal commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, especially in the work Life of a Lotus aims to do.

As a final thought, Life of a Lotus wants to highlight some resources that have helped us in our ongoing commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. We invite you to read The 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Report and to explore two organizations whose resources have been helpful to us in writing this land acknowledgement and accountability statement: Future Ancestors Services and the On Canada Project.
